Terrist (less commonly
terraist) is a
neologism referring to
environmentalists who engage
in actions considered by some to
be
terrorism, (eco-terrorism)
including destruction of
property as well as various
types of
nonviolent
direct action.
The word is a
portmanteau of
Terra,
Latin for
Earth, with the word
terrorism.
Some radical environmentalists
may feel that their crimes which
hamper certain activities are
morally justified in that they
prevent a greater crime, such as
the destruction of the planet.
Additionally, terrist
(sometimes written ter'rist
or terr'ist) has been used
as a
phonetic representation of how
some
English-speakers, notably
United States
president
George W. Bush, sometimes
pronounce terrorist.
In
August 2005, a couple whose
home address was mistakenly
identified on national television
as belonging to an Islamic
extremist had found that someone
had spray painted the word
terrist on their property—with
the probable intent of saying
terrorist.
