Imbibition is the
process referred to the
penetration of a fluid into a
porous medium. More precisely,
is the case of
immiscible fluid-fluid
displacements in porous media
where the invading fluid is the
most viscous. The process is
called spontaneous imbibition
when an invading fluid displaces
the resident one at constant
external
pressure. In contrast,
forced-flow imbibition takes
place when the invading fluid gets
into the porous medium at a
constant injection rate.
